It was renamed the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad in 1995. It has three sections: Junior, Senior and Open.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Eligibility<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMO is meant for students who study in Singapore. The society publishes fresh rules every year, so check the current rules before you plan. The 2025 rules gave this picture:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Junior Section:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Secondary 1 and 2 students, born on or after 2 January 2011.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Senior Section:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Secondary 3 and 4 students, born on or after 2 January 2009.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Open Section:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Full-time students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 and Junior College.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all sections, the student must never have attended a tertiary institution full-time.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><b>Exam format<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMO has two rounds. Round 1 for the Junior Section is a written paper of two and a half hours with multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Strong performers move to Round 2. The Open Section Round 2 is also used to help select the Singapore National Training Team for the International Mathematical Olympiad in the following year.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Syllabus<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMO papers go beyond the school textbook. The school&#8217;s Head of Department for Mathematics sends the names and fees to the contest committee before the closing date.
