I’d quiz her out loud and she’d nail every answer without hesitating once. But on paper, she’d drop two or three marks per question, like clockwork, across every subject she took. Turns out the problem wasn’t her knowledge at all. It was that she wrote down everything she knew, all at once, in one long breathless paragraph, kind of hoping the examiner would sift through it and find the right bits on their own. Examiners don’t work that way, though. They’re matching your answer against a marking scheme, usually under real time pressure, and a wall of text just makes that harder which, unfortunately, tends to drag your score down with it.

So let’s actually walk through a method for this. Short answer questions usually sit somewhere between one-word or fill-in-the-blank questions and full essay responses. Typically worth 2 to 5 marks, expecting somewhere around 2 to 6 sentences depending on how much weight they carry and here’s the part students miss most graded against a specific marking scheme with defined points the examiner is checking off, not some general impression of how smart your answer happens to sound.

That last bit really does change how you should approach writing one. You’re not performing knowledge for an audience. You’re hitting checkpoints, one at a time.

Step 1: Read the Question Twice Before Writing a Word

Sounds almost too obvious to bother mentioning, but it’s genuinely where most lost marks start. Students read a question once, latch onto a familiar keyword, and start writing based on what they think was asked rather than what was actually asked.

Read it once just to get the general idea. Then read it again specifically to catch the command word explain, define, list, compare, justify, describe because each one is asking for something structurally different. “Define” wants a precise, textbook-style line. “Explain” wants the reasoning behind a concept laid out. “Compare” wants two things placed side by side, not described one after the other with no actual link drawn between them. That last one, answering a “compare” question with two separate descriptions and no real comparison, is one of the most common ways students lose marks on an otherwise perfectly correct answer.

Step 2: Work Out How Many Points the Question Is Actually Looking For

Most short answer questions have an implicit, sometimes outright explicit, number of points the marking scheme wants, and it’s usually tied directly to the marks on offer. A 3-mark question is frequently fishing for three distinct points, not one point explained three slightly different ways.

Before writing anything, jot down mentally, or right there in the margin roughly how many separate ideas this question needs. This one step heads off two very common mistakes at once: writing too little and missing marks you actually knew the answer to, or writing way too much and burning exam time you’ll need somewhere else.

Step 3: Plan the Shape of the Answer Before Writing It

A short answer doesn’t need a full essay structure, but it does benefit from a bit of internal logic and some clear order the ideas build in. A quick mental outline, or a literal one scribbled in the margin, works fine: point one, point two, maybe a brief example if the marks seem to call for it.

This takes maybe ten seconds, and it saves a surprising amount of backtracking, crossing out, and awkward squeezed-in insertions later because you remembered something halfway through writing. A quick plan just keeps the answer moving forward instead of looping back on itself.

Step 4: Lead With the Actual Answer, Not a Warm-Up

A lot of students open short answers with a sentence or two of throat-clearing restating the question, setting the scene, easing gently into the content. Examiners, reading hundreds of these under serious time pressure, genuinely don’t need that warm-up. They need the answer.

Start with the core point right away. If the question asks “What is photosynthesis?”The first sentence should actually define photosynthesis not talk about why plants are interesting, or how important the process is to life on Earth generally. Save any of that extra context for afterward, once the core answer is already down on paper, if there’s room and marks left for it.

Step 5: Reach for Precise, Subject-Specific Words

Examiners are scanning for keywords that line up with the marking scheme, and vague language “a type of thing that happens” instead of the actual technical term often just fails to trigger the mark, even when the underlying understanding is genuinely sitting right there.

If a term has a specific name in your subject, use it. “Cell division,” not “cells splitting up.” “Mitigation strategy,” not “a way to reduce the problem.” This isn’t about sounding impressive for its own sake, it’s about handing the examiner exactly what the marking scheme is hunting for, in the language it’s hunting for.

Step 6: One Idea Per Sentence

Short answers lose clarity fast when a single sentence tries to carry two or three ideas stacked on top of each other, usually glued together with “and” or “which also.” Splitting those into separate sentences does two things at once: it makes each point easier for the examiner to spot and credit on its own, and it makes the answer easier for you to control while you’re actually writing it under pressure.

A rough but genuinely useful rule: if a sentence needs more than one comma just to hold together, it’s probably trying to do too much at once, and it’s worth splitting into two cleaner sentences instead.

Step 7: Reread and Trim Before Moving On

This step gets skipped constantly, almost always because of time pressure, but it’s often where the easiest, most free marks are sitting unclaimed. A fast reread catches repeated points (which waste time without earning anything extra), missing connecting words that quietly confuse the meaning, and maybe most useful of all whether the answer has actually fully addressed the command word from Step 1.

This doesn’t need to eat much time. Ten to fifteen seconds per short answer is usually enough to catch the obvious stuff. It’s not a rewrite.
