What a nurse needs to know has basically nothing in common with what a web developer needs to know, except that both sets of knowledge were learned somewhere, in a classroom, through a certification, on the job, or by just fumbling through it enough times until it clicked.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think coding, spreadsheet modeling, running paid ad campaigns, welding, CAD software, bookkeeping, speaking a second language well enough to close a deal in it. Somebody either knows how to write a working SQL query or they don&#8217;t. There&#8217;s no ambiguity. Communication. Empathy. Adaptability. The ability to sit through a genuinely annoying meeting and not lose your patience. A line cook, a hospital administrator, and a venture capitalist all need to stay calm when something goes wrong and communicate clearly about it. Technical ability is built through structured learning, a course you took, a manual you read, hours of repetition. Soft skills are built through living your life and paying attention while you do it, mentors who called you out when you needed it, mistakes you were embarrassed enough by to actually learn from.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also age at wildly different speeds. This one catches people off guard. A technical skill, especially in anything tech adjacent, can lose most of its value in a couple of years. The framework everyone was using when you learned it might already be considered outdated by the time you&#8217;re using it confidently. Soft skills basically don&#8217;t decay. Knowing how to calm down an angry client was just as valuable twenty years ago as it is now, and it&#8217;ll still be valuable long after whatever software you&#8217;re using today gets replaced.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portability is another big one. If you&#8217;re great at a very specific piece of accounting software, that skill is only worth something in jobs that use that software. But being a clear communicator or someone who adapts well under pressure? That travels with you into basically any room you walk into.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there&#8217;s how you actually measure the thing. Technical skills get tested. You can hand someone a project, a certification exam, a coding challenge, and get a pretty objective answer. Soft skills get judged, slowly, over time, based on how someone acts when a deadline gets moved up or a customer is furious on the phone.
