Addition and Subtraction for Class 3: Complete Guide with Tricks, Word Problems & Worksheets

Somewhere in Class 3, the numbers stop being small enough to handle in your head. Two digit sums that used to be automatic suddenly need carrying. Subtraction starts asking you to borrow from a column that’s just sitting there as a zero. Nobody really pauses to explain why any of that works, it just gets shown as a set of steps, and a lot of kids end up following the steps without knowing why they’re doing them.

This is an attempt to actually explain addition and subtraction for Class 3, along with the tricks, the word problems, and a worksheet at the end for practice.

    What Changes in Class 3

    Up to this point, addition and subtraction have mostly stayed small, single digits, maybe an easy double digit sum here and there. Class 3 brings in numbers with two and three digits, and with that comes regrouping. Addition needs it when a column adds up past 9. Subtraction needs it when the top digit is smaller than the one you’re subtracting.

    Addition combines numbers to get a total. Subtraction finds the gap between two numbers. Both of those definitions a Class 3 student already knows are cold. What’s new is handling the moment a column overflows, or runs short.

    Addition with Carrying

    Say a column adds up to 10 or more. You write down the ones digit, and the extra gets carried into the next column over.

    Take 47 + 38. In the ones column, 7 + 8 makes 15. Write the 5, carry the 1. Move to tens: 4 + 3 + that carried 1 comes to 8. Answer 85.

    Bigger numbers work the same way, just with an extra column. 256 + 187: ones gives 6 + 7 = 13, write 3, carry 1. Tens gives 5 + 8 + 1 = 14, write 4, carry 1 again. Hundreds gives 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Final answer, 443.

    Subtraction with Borrowing

    Now the opposite problem. The top digit in a column is smaller than what you’re subtracting. You borrow a ten from the column to its left.

    62 − 35 is a decent starting example. The ones column has 2, and you’re subtracting 5, which doesn’t work without help. So you borrow a ten from the tens column, turning 2 into 12. 12 − 5 = 7. That borrowing knocked the tens column from 6 down to 5, so 5 − 3 = 2. Answer 27.

    The one that actually trips kids up is when there’s a zero involved. 403 − 178, for instance. The ones column needs to subtract 8 from 3, which fails immediately. Normally you’d borrow from tens, but tens is sitting at zero, nothing to borrow. So the borrow has to reach further, into the hundreds column first. That turns 4 into 3, and gives tens a full 10 to work with. Now tens lends one of its ten to ones, dropping to 9 and pushing ones up to 13. From there: 13 − 8 = 5, 9 − 7 = 2, 3 − 1 = 2. Final answer, 225. Worth walking through slowly with an actual student the first time this comes up, since the double borrow is genuinely confusing without seeing it laid out step by step.

    A Few Tricks Worth Knowing

    Rounding helps more than people expect. 98 + 47 is easier as 100 + 47, then subtract the 2 you added. Breaking numbers into tens and ones works well too, 34 + 28 becomes 30 + 20 and 4 + 8 separately, then combined.

    A number line is handy for double checking smaller subtraction, and checking subtraction with addition catches most errors before they become habits, since the answer plus what you subtracted should land back on the original number. If regrouping still feels shaky, drilling, carrying and borrowing as separate skills, not mixed together, tends to help more than jumping straight into full problems. Drawing out place value blocks, actual little groups for hundreds, tens, and ones, makes the whole idea click for a lot of kids who struggle with it as pure numbers on paper.

    Word Problems Worth Practicing

    The school has 245 students in Class 3 and 178 in Class 4. Add them together and you get 423 students total.

    Riya had 356 stickers and gave 129 away. What’s left is 356 minus 129, which comes to 227.

    Here’s one with two additions stacked: a shopkeeper sold 134 pens on Monday, 187 on Tuesday. Total across both days, 321 pens.

    A library holding 500 books lends out 267. That leaves 233 still on the shelves.

    Aman scored 78 in one test, 65 in another, for a combined 143 marks.

    A farmer starts with 620 mangoes, sells 384 at the market. What remains is 236.

    A train carrying 215 passengers picks up 96 more at the next stop, bringing the total to 311.

    Lastly, a baker makes 450 cookies, sells 289 by day’s end. What’s left over comes out to 161.

    One habit that clears up most of the confusion here: have the child underline the numbers, then circle whatever word signals the operation, total, left, sold, remaining, before they even attempt the sum.

    Forgetting to carry is probably the single most common slip, the column math is right, but the carried digit just gets dropped. Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one regardless of which is on top is another, ignoring that borrowing is even needed. Zeros in the middle of a subtraction problem cause real trouble too, since the borrow has to jump two columns instead of one, and that’s not intuitive the first several times you see it. Misaligned digits when writing sums vertically, especially with numbers of different lengths, throws off otherwise correct math. And with word problems specifically, rushing past the actual question, total versus remaining, leads to plenty of technically correct arithmetic answering the wrong thing.

    Keep carrying and borrowing separate at first, don’t mix them into the same worksheet until each one feels solid on its own. Physical objects or simple drawings representing hundreds, tens, and ones do more for understanding regrouping than steps written out on paper ever will. Working through a couple of problems out loud together, narrating the thinking rather than just checking whether the final number’s right, tends to surface misunderstandings faster. Mix addition and subtraction day to day instead of drilling one operation for a stretch. And the double borrow subtraction case, the one with a zero in it, is worth revisiting on a separate day rather than expecting it to stick from one explanation.
