Simple Present Tense Rules (Easy Version)

Before you start any worksheet, read these short rules. They will help children answer with confidence.

Rule 1: Use the base verb with I, you, we, and they

    • I play cricket.
    • You read books.
    • We walk to school.
    • They sing well.

Rule 2: Add s or es with he, she, it, and one name

    • He plays cricket.
    • She reads books.
    • The dog barks.
    • Riya sings well.

Rule 3: Add es to verbs that end in s, sh, ch, x, o, or z

    • watch → watches
    • wash → washes
    • go → goes
    • fix → fixes

Rule 4: If a verb ends in consonant + y, change y to ies

    • study → studies
    • cry → cries
    • fly → flies

But if a vowel comes before y, just add s: play → plays, enjoy → enjoys.

Rule 5: Questions and negatives use do or does

    • Question: Do you like tea? / Does he like tea?
    • Negative: I do not (don’t) like tea. / He does not (doesn’t) like tea.

After does, the main verb goes back to its base form. We say “Does she play?” and not “Does she plays?”

Common Mistakes Children Make (and How to Fix Them)

    1. Forgetting the s with he, she, or it. Wrong: She play tennis. Right: She plays tennis. Tip: Say “he, she, it, add s” together as a small chant.
    2. Using s after does. Wrong: Does he likes tea? Right: Does he like tea? Tip: Does already carries the s. The verb stays plain.
    3. Mixing up do and does. Use does with he, she, it, and a single name. Use do with I, you, we, and they.
    4. Wrong spelling of verbs ending in y. Wrong: He studys daily. Right: He studies daily.

    Tips for Parents and Teachers

    • Keep sessions short. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for young children.
    • Use real life. Ask children to talk about their own day: “What do you eat for breakfast?”
    • Play games. Try a quick quiz where the child gives the right verb form before you count to five.
    • Praise effort. A child who feels safe will try more and learn faster.
    • Review often. A short worksheet twice a week works better than a long one once a month.

    Frequently Asked Questions

     11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121 and 132.

Add the digits in the odd positions, add the digits in the even positions, and subtract. If the difference is 0 or a multiple of 11, the number is divisible by 11. For example, 2574 gives 9 and 9, a difference of 0, so it divides by 11.

With 5 to 10 minutes of daily practice, most children feel comfortable within a week or two. Because the first nine answers repeat so neatly, many get there faster than they do with the 7s or 8s.
